Insulin is used to correct hyperkalaemia.

  • Hyperkalaemia is increased plasma potassium level above normal range in extracellular fluid. There is increased membrane excitability, which leads to ventricular arrhythmia and ventricular fibrillation.
  • Administration of iv insulin activates Na+- K+ ATPase pump and causes redistribution of K+ from extracellular into the cells by Na+-K+ ATPase pump.

This pump moves:

  • 3 Na⁺ out of the cell
  • 2 K⁺ into the cell
  • Potassium shifts from extracellular fluid (plasma) into cells, lowering serum K⁺.

Thus is used to correct hyperkalaemia
