GLUCOSE IS GIVEN IN TREATMENT OF ACUTE INTERMITTENT PORPHYRIA

  • ACUTE INTERMITTENT PORPHYRIA is inherited as an autosomal dominant trait.
  • Deficiency of= PBG deaminase (UPG-1 synthase) leads to Accumulation of ALA and Porphobilinogen leads to Oxidative damage to CNS and neurotoxic effects

Effect of Glucose

  1. On ALA synthase :Inhibits Biosynthesis
  2. On Succinyl Co-A : Uses up succinyl Co-A in TCA cycle
