DIARRHOEA CAUSES NORMAL ANION GAP ACIDOSIS

  • DIARRHOEA : Excessive loss of intestinal secretions, fluid and electrolytes in stool.
  • ANION GAP : Difference between concentration of Cations and Anions present within blood.
  • Anion Gap = (Na• + K•)-(HCO3 - + Cl-)
  • Actually the unmeasured anions present in trace amount constitute the aniongap.{12mmol/L}.

OR

  • Diarrhoea —→ Loss of intestinal fluids —→ Loss of bicarbonate (HCO₃⁻) in stool —→ Decrease in plasma bicarbonate —→ Metabolic acidosis develops —→ Kidneys retain chloride (Cl⁻) to maintain electro neutrality —→ ↑ Chloride (Hyperchloremic) —→ Na⁺ − (Cl⁻ + HCO₃⁻) remains normal —→ NORMAL ANION GAP (Hyperchloremic) METABOLIC ACIDOSIS
